PROGRAMME
I am the Musical Director, composer and lyricist of ‘My Wife and The King’. A local boy, I have had an interest in drama and theatre arts and music since childhood when I appeared in productions myself. In my late teens I taught myself to play the guitar and was the front man in several bands. During this period my biggest inspirations were The Beatles and Jesus Christ Superstar. My first love however was composing music and writing lyrics. The tale of the forbidden romance of Wallis and the Prince of Wales had always intrigued me and I began to research the story in books and documentaries, where it soon became apparent that her husband, Ernest, had been somewhat neglected by historians.
I began to question how he might have felt and, after further research, learned that throughout her affair with Prince Edward, Wallis retained a deep love for her husband. She continued to write to him right up to the abdication, even expressing feelings of loneliness as she became trapped by her relationship with the Prince. It was this story of greed, obsession and confusion that inspired me to try and turn it into a musical. I transferred some of the early songs to a CD which my mother played to Patricia Richardson. She, in turn, played it to her colleagues at Impact Theatre who expressed their confidence in my work and their eagerness to turn my dream into reality. I thank them, the cast, all the amazing people behind the scenes, my family and my friends for their enthusiasm, help and support. I also thank you, the audience, for coming to share this exciting project with me.
